The Difference Between Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery
For those uncertain of the difference between the laparoscopic and robotic surgery, our robotic surgery center has provided a comparison.
We live in a time where an individual has multiple options when deciding how to be treated for surgery. While all methods of surgery have their benefits, we understand that patients want to know what their options are. Most would prefer minimally invasive surgery over traditional open surgery but even then, patients can be offered two options: laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery.
Compared to traditional surgery where a surgeon creates a large incision to perform the surgery, these minimally invasive options have more precision and result in shorter recovery times.
Laparoscopic Surgery
In laparoscopic surgery, our surgeon makes small incisions and inserts a camera called a laparoscope and other surgical instruments. The surgeon then manipulates the inserted tools. As with all minimally invasive techniques, this surgery will result in reduced pain, faster recovery time, and less blood loss. However, laparoscopic surgery means the use of a camera only showing 2D imaging, and a limited range of motion, making it difficult for surgeons to work in smaller areas.
Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery is similar to laparoscopic surgery because it also entails the use of a laparoscope and surgical tools. However, instead of physically manipulating the tools, our experts at the robotic surgery center control the tools with a console. This console controls the robot’s movement and provides our surgeon with clear 3D imaging of the inside of the patient’s body. This provides the surgeon with a clear and accurate view, with the robot’s dexterity providing a greater range of precision and motion. This procedure results in even less pain and bleeding post-operation.
