What Is a Cholecystectomy?
In an open gallbladder surgery procedure, your surgeon makes one single incision in the abdomen to remove the gallbladder. The incision is generally made either in the middle of the upper abdomen or under the right rib cage.
What is a Cholecystectomy For?
The most common reason for gallbladder removal is gallbladder stones. The gallbladder is a small organ located in the upper right side of the abdomen. It collects and releases bile from the liver to help with digestion. Sometimes, small stones can form in the bile duct or in the gallbladder and can cause pain.
Common symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Jaundice
- Indigestion that is not relieved with antacids
- Vomiting
- Pain in the right side of the abdomen
